Reflection

Ok so here’s something that is a bit off the beaten track of my blog so far. I’ve been thinking a lot about the past year and where my family and I have been, specifically my husband and I.  A little over a year ago we changed our lives significantly drastically.  Don’t worry, it was all for the best!

You see we were introduced by my husband’s brother and sister-in-law to this, for lack of a better word, program on how to be debt free.  At first I was a little skeptical about the idea of this program, only because I’ve seen and heard of various other programs out there that claim to help you get out of debt and you don’t have to do much to accomplish it.

After I got “let go” from my position at my job the year before, credit card bills were piling up, our normal bills were taking a toll on us and not to mention the fact that my husband was going to be graduating from college in a few months and we didn’t know how we were going to squeak by on one income paying for all of our bills plus student loans. My husband wanted to give it a try, his brother and sister-in-law took the classes and became debt free with-in a few months of finishing the course.

They recommended we read a book  about the “program” that shows us how to become debt free, before we sign up for the class, it was a good thing that they had a copy of the book for us to borrow. The book, Total Money Makeover, basically outlines the author’s philosophy and steps to become debt free and other advice on all things financial that are going to come up in a person’s life

Basically what I’m trying to get at is that the classes we took saved us. We created a budget that works for us, created an emergency fund for well, emergencies, and started a debt snowball to eventually kick Sallie Mae to the curb. The class, Financial Peace University, changed our lives, since last January my husband and I have paid off over $10,000 in debt and granted we have much more to go, I can not wait till the day where we can finally say that we don’t have any debt.

So I guess what I’m trying to say is if you want to find a way out of debt and are struggling maybe check it out and give it a shot. It can work, if you give it a chance and live like no one else so later you can live like no one else.
